How to write a resume for a finance job

When writing an accounting or financial resume, you’ll want to display your education, certifications, and technical prominently. Finance jobs require specific qualifications to prove you can be trusted working with money. Many companies also value certain software and computer skills related to financial operations.

Depending on how long you’ve been out of school, you may or may not want to include details about your education on your resume. For example, your GPA, relevant courses, and graduation date shouldn’t be included if you’ve been in the professional world for a few years. Professional experience is more relevant than academic experience. However, if you’re a recent graduate or you haven’t gotten experience in finance yet, details of your degree will help you incorporate more skills that a finance professional’s resume requires.

Your hard skills will explain your familiarity will certain technologies. Use a technical skills section or incorporate your computer skills in your work experience section. Look at multiple job descriptions for your target job title to see what employers are looking for. For finance jobs, this might include familiarity with cryptocurrency or blockchain, spreadsheet functions, and specific tools like Affirm, Quickbooks, or Square.

In 2020, your skills are important for two reasons: making you look perfectly qualified to an employer and for showing up on an ATS (applicant tracking systems) scan. Try to match your skill set to the job description using the exact same language. This will help you look like a great match for the finance position.

Finally, all financial resumes must include numbers. In addition to your phone number and the dates of your employment, use data points and metrics to describe your experience and accomplishments. Here are some ideas:

  • % of money saved by [insert specific change here]
  • $ amount of budgets handled
  • # of reports filed, managed, or input
  • % of growth achieved month over month

Since resumes are mostly text, numbers really stand out.

It’s never a bad idea to have an up-to-date resume. While updating your finance resume, it’s smart to compare your experience with recent financial ob listings in your field as well as updated professional resume samples. That will give you a better idea of how your resume should look and what skills you should focus on.
