How to write a resume

2. Gather the essential information

As you can imagine, it would be impossible for you to customize the resume to the right target audience if you don’t know what to include. Did you notice how the heading of this section has the word “essential” in it? That’s because your resume isn’t meant to be a comprehensive catalog of everything you’ve ever done in your professional life. It’s a targeted marketing document that speaks to a particular job. The best bet – to keep your resume fresh and relevant – is to focus on the last 10 years of experience. Collect the experiences and, just as importantly, the achievements you’ve had during that time. These are the building blocks of your resume. 

3. Structure matters

Now that you have some semblance of an idea of what you’re going to write on the page and who you’re writing it for, you have to format it in a way that makes sense. There are three widely accepted resume formats – the chronological, the combination (sometimes called hybrid), and the functional (though the functional resume has a stigma associated with it). Hiring managers expect to see the chronological format, though they’re happy to get a combination format, too. 

4. Draw them in with a stellar profile paragraph

Regardless of whether you choose chronological or hybrid, one of the first things on the page will be a profile paragraph. This is three to five sentences that are basically the ABCs of you as a Property Manager. This concise paragraph should provide a snapshot of your skills, accomplishments, and career objectives. A well-crafted summary immediately captures the reader's attention and entices them to explore further.

5. It’s ALL about achievements

For the love of all things good in this world, avoid using the phrases “Responsible for…” or “Accountable for…” anywhere on your resume. Don’t use them in the profile paragraph or in your career history. Let’s face it, there are a lot of things people are “responsible for” that simply never get done. All a future employer wants to know is how your Property Manager career will help them. The best way to demonstrate that is to show what you’ve already accomplished during your career. 

Here’s a general rule of thumb for you – for every 10 years of experience, you should have a minimum of five achievement statements, though more is better. If you can put a quantifiable achievement in every single bullet, then go for it. Shoot for the stars!

6. The final touches

Don’t cringe when you read this, but the last step in perfecting the finely-tuned machine that is your resume is to proofread it. This means meticulously going through each word, comma, period, capital letter, and abbreviation to make sure it’s grammatically correct, spelled properly, and legible. The number of times that a resume makes it onto a hiring manager’s desk with a typo is astounding!
