How to write a resume

Dissect the job description

The best way to figure out what they want you to do is to read the job description. As you work through each line, pull out the relevant keywords. These phrases will need to show up on your resume so that you can get past the applicant tracking systems (ATS) that companies use to weed out candidates.

You won’t be dissecting just one job description though. You’ll need to do it every time you apply for a position because your resume needs to be tailored to each job individually. 

Reverse-chronological format

Now that you have a good idea of what you’ll be writing, it’s time to start typing. There are a lot of resume formats out there. A lot of people feel that they need to use a heavily-formatted, eye-catching resume to grab the hiring manager’s attention. For the love of everything good in this world, avoid doing that at all costs. The ATS can’t properly parse information from those resume styles.

Proofread it when you’re done

Technically speaking you’re never done writing your resume as you should be updating it regularly – every six months or so is best.
