Tips for Writing an Engineering Resume

1. Ditch the Objective

Including an objective statement on a resume is a big mistake as it's often limiting, outdated and ineffective. You should instead utilize a professional summary that tells the employer a bit about who you are, how you're qualified, and why you're the best fit for the position. You should try to mention some notable achievements from your past work experience to help you stand out from the competition.

2. Include a technical skills section

Those in the engineering field often have many technical skills listed on a resume. This is why you should create a separate section for it. You can label the section "technical skills" on your resume and include the most relevant ones.

3. Write for the applicant tracking system

You also need to ensure your resume is optimized for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) which most employers use. ATS software is designed to automatically screen resumes and determine which candidates are a good match for the position. An ATS looks for keywords, education, years of experience, and other relevant information. To ensure your resume is optimized for these scans you should use clear headings, standard formatting, and use relevant keywords. You can see how your resume does in an actual ATS scan through our free resume review.

4. Focus on Achievements

Many job seekers simply list out all the responsibilities they held in previous positions which is really ineffective. There could be hundreds of other candidates applying for the same position which is why you need to focus on your achievements and contributions. Show the hiring manager quantifiable achievements and how you went above and beyond what was expected. This will really capture their attention and help you stand out.
