These days, the internet is flooded with an overwhelming number of resume writing services. Believe it or not, a simple search for “resume writing services” generates over 8,000 results.
You’ll find results for local and national options, as well as specialists in different industries.
While browsing the results, you’ll notice hundreds of companies and freelancers offering resume writing services that appear to be quite shady. Since your resume can get your foot in the door and help you land the right job, it’s important to select a quality service that gets you results.
To help take the guesswork out of choosing the right resume service for you, we’ve created this post of the 12 best resume services for job seekers (including our service: Zipjob).
While searching for resume services, you will find both national and local results. The only time you would choose to use a local service is when you are meeting the writer face to face.
The majority of local services will work with you virtually (not in person) so you may be better off hiring a national company that has multiple writers and ATS technology.
Average cost of a resume by the top resume services.
Zipjob uses a tech-informed, expert-designed protocol to create resumes that appeal to ATS scans and hiring managers: the same technology used by employers to screen resumes.
Writers experienced in resume keyword optimization add an extra step at the end of the process to ensure your new resume will be parsed correctly by an ATS scan.
An ATS has another important job — filtering out the resumes that don’t meet the pre-set requirements. On average, applicant tracking systems delete 75% of the resumes submitted.
The Muse offers a different model for resume writing services. Instead of a text-based collaboration, The Muse has a resume review coaching service that includes a resume update. Depending on the coaching service you purchase, you can have a 30, 45, or 60 minute Skype or phone call with a professional.
Most people use LinkedIn to search for jobs and career-related information. However, many are unaware that it offers a “professional service marketplace” called LinkedIn ProFinder for interviewing, career coaching, and resume writing.
Speaking of LinkedIn, do you know how to include your LinkedIn URL on a resume?
This list would not be complete without TopResume. TopResume is a large company with a significant web presence.
Its website includes some awesome statistics, such as that a professional resume can make you 38% more likely to be contacted by recruiters (so figure out how to reply to recruiters), 31% more likely to land an interview, and 40% more likely to land a job.
LiveCareer started as a career test site in 2004 and eventually launched a resume builder and a professional resume writing service. It is one of the largest resume builders around, with over 10 million resumes created for people in 180 countries.
In addition to their resume writing service, LiveCareer has a separate cover letter writing option. If you only need help with a cover letter instead of a resume/cover letter bundle, this is a good option.
Monster is primarily a job board, resume writing services are available through them. Like many of these resume companies, there are tiers of services with additional add-ons for cover letters and LinkedIn profiles.
Monster stands out as a recruiter-focused resume writing service. Based on their decades of job searches and working with recruiters to source talent, their resumes are easy for recruiters to filter and scan.
Capstone Resumes offer a variety of specialized resume services, such as Federal and Executive Level resumes. The company was started by Amy Giles, who has been writing resumes since 2003. Capstone Resumes was formerly called Gies Career Services, but now specializes in the resume writing portion of the business.
Since it was built for finance professionals specifically, iHireFinance is a great option for budget analysts, equity traders, tax managers, and anyone seeking a job in the financial industry. Its writers are educated, certified, and trained in modern resume writing for the finance niche.
ESQ Resume is the best option for legal-specific resume writing services. Regardless of if you’re a law student, first-year associate, or senior-level attorney, ESQ Resumes can help you write your resumes, cover letters, and professional biographies.
If you’re on a budget or an entry level applicant, Fiverr has some options for you to consider. It can connect you with a variety of service providers, but it isn’t based on proposals.
Instead, you can choose from over 2,000 freelancers by searching for “resume writing” services, with additional filters for “resume design,” “resume and cover letter,” and even “ATS resume.”
For the budget-conscious—looking at you, recent grads—Fiverr is a good option.
There are hundreds of writers to pick from and the rates are usually low enough to allow a few revisions or even experimenting with a few different writers.
There are some pretty obvious up-sides to using a service like Fiverr. Our favorites are price, selection, and flexibility. If you’ve never bought a Fiverr gig, here’s what you need to know.
This is, by far, the biggest advantage Fiverr has over other options. Gigs start at $5 and often may only go as high as $25 for some of the standard add-ons like Cover Letters or editable files.
In our research, gigs with 24-hour delivery, editable files, and edit/rewrite options still started at $5. Starting prices went as high as $125.
Fiverr’s entire philosophy is bringing together buyers and sellers—and they do a great job of it. Exact figures were hard to come by, but our research suggests that they have more than 100,000 active users. Probably much more than that.
There’s something for everyone. That’s especially true for budget shoppers who are trying to get the best deal or find a vendor whose taste and style match yours.
The size and competition of the Fiverr gig economy mean that sellers are always trying to compete for more buyers. And as with any economy, demand drives supply.
Fiverr gig sellers are generally very flexible, and are willing to offer customized addons or upsells for a price. That gives buyers the chance to get exactly the personalization they want, with a professional quality.
The downsides of Fiverr are pretty obvious, too. And, in some ways, the very features that we just described as up-sides can also have considerable downsides.
Given the hands-off approach that Fiverr takes to its marketplace, you won’t have much recourse if you don’t get what you were promised or if you’re unsatisfied with the results.
Yes, you can dispute and complain, etc.—similar to how eBay handles disputes—but that’s not the same thing as being able to speak to a support rep or a supervisor to get your issue addressed.
Unless the gig seller allows it, you’ll have no access to them other than the communication channels built into Fiverr—no phone, no direct email. Just a dashboard.
In most cases, that works out fine. But many job seekers want the reassurance of a verbal conversation with their writer. Very hard to do on Fiverr.
Fiverr is notorious for fakers, especially when it comes to their reviews. It’s basically impossible to trust any reviews you see on a Seller’s profile.
Buying Fiverr reviews is rampant, even though it’s against the terms. There are even how-to articles written about how to buy Fiverr reviews and avoid detection.
Thumbtack is another way to find individuals providing resume services. Think of it as an online bulletin board. You can use the site to search for resume writers and filter based on travel preferences, target industry, and additional service needs. Thumbtack is not involved in the payment process, so you will have to work with your writer to discuss your options.
Thumbtack charges its pros to send a quote to potential clients, so do your research before contacting a resume writer. The company makes it easy for vendors to be upfront about pricing, expertise, qualifications, and even Q&As about why they’re in the business. Keep an eye out for badges such as “Top Pro,” “In High Demand,” and “Great Value” to help guide your choice.
If you’re transitioning from military to civilian work, Military Resume Writers is a great choice as it knows exactly how to translate military experience onto a resume.
This service specializes in working with veterans to translate military experience to something that will impress a hiring manager.
If you skimmed the rest of the article, and just wanted to reach this part, here’s all you need to know about WHY some of these resume writing service websites are scams, and how to spot the signals for yourself.
Some of the websites ranking and/or advertising near the top of Google search results aren’t what they seem to be.
Since it’s relatively easy to set up a website and position yourself as a professional, resume writing scams are rampant. And the stats predict that ~30% of searchers will click on the #1 result. That’s 900 new victims a month–clearly something is wrong here.
We’ve even talked to Google about it; we’ll update this post if we get the matter sorted out. In the meantime, we’re committed to helping you identify these junk resume companies and encourage you to follow these tips for spotting a resume writing scam.
Before you pay someone, run a quick search for reviews. Look for established sites like Better Business Bureau, Angie’s List, or Consumer Reports.
Check out at user reviews on Trustpilot, SiteJabber, Reddit, and Quora, but be on alert for 5 star reviews that all say the same thing or aren’t from a verified order.
They appear as though they’re genuine ‘best of’ posts, meant to help users. But they’re just marketing.
These deceptions are hard to spot unless you know the industry, but they become pretty clear after some research.
We’re reminded of those “4 out of 5 dentists recommend” commercials. If you asked 5 dentists, you’d see a clear majority pointing toward the same recommendation.
But what if you only ask one dentist? Then how would you know? You need a few more points of comparison in order to draw the best conclusion. The same is true here.
When you find one of these ‘best of’ articles (this one included!) take their rankings/reviews with a grain of salt, and do some follow-up research.
As we alluded to at the beginning of this post, many “best resume services” lists are affiliate marketing lists.
If the links they have pointing to the other resume services are affiliate links, that means that these scammers earn a commission when anyone signs up with these services by way of their junk website(s).
While this doesn’t mean the services are scams, it does mean that the people writing the lists have a financial interest in you purchasing services through their links.
Again, affiliate links don’t automatically make something a scam. The problem is a lack of transparency.
When the affiliate links aren’t disclosed anywhere on the page and they never tell you that there’s money on the line with their recommendations, we consider that a problem.
You’ll also want to ignore offers that promise to get you your dream job, guarantee ridiculously fast turnaround times, or send you a resume draft without communicating with you about your goals and experience.
Professional resume writers can improve your resume’s content and design, but should never present you as someone else. Be realistic with your expectations!
Any lack of disclosure means that you—the customer—don’t have all the information. And therefore you can’t make the best decision about whether or not to trust the reviews.
A trustworthy resume service will be open and transparent about how they do what they do.
We’ve got pages and pages of information on how to optimize your resume for ATS.

Writing a resume is hard. Job searching is stressful. The industry analysts say the average job search lasts 40 weeks—about 9 or 10 months.
Why is it so hard to find a job? Lots of reasons. But there are a lot of great resources out there and some not-so-great ones.
Getting a professionally-written resume should never add to your stress, so we hope this list helps you choose the best option for your career goals.
You’ll notice that many companies on this list offer a free resume review or a resume consultation. Some can even help you answer questions like “what’s the right way to list hobbies and interests on a resume?”
This is a great option for getting a variety of opinions on your existing resume.
However, watch out for impersonal or general advice that doesn’t seem to relate to your resume submission. Some services are automated, despite what their misleading advertising may claim.
Do your homework and keep the faith. Everyone finds a job sooner or later. It takes patience, persistence, and preparation.
We hope this article helped you improve your job search, or better yet—end it! But if you still need help, please get in touch! This is what we do for a living, and we’d love to help you too.
It’s easy for us to write a blog post and claim we’re the best. But if we did only that, we’d be no better than the scams we cover later in this post.
So to back up our claims, we’ve included some customer reviews to show how much our clients love us.
There’s a reason our resources rank among the top search results for:
These 600+ Zipjob reviews are compiled and stored by TrustPilot, a neutral third party—not by us. Please feel free to leave your own review there if you’re happy with our work!
We know you will be. Because we know what we’re doing and our customers do, too. If you like what you see, give us a try👇
There are many professional resume writing services to choose from, such as the 12 on this list. Since there is no shortage of fraudulent services out there, do your due diligence before giving your private information to a less than reputable company.
The best resume writing services have good examples, positive reviews, and responsive customer service teams. A variety of ways to contact the company is a good indicator of a legitimate business, but we advise you to try out one or two methods of contact before making your selection. Steer clear of disconnected phone numbers and unanswered emails!
Remember that resume writing services are mainly digital today, so you don’t need to limit your search to local options. When in doubt, however, keep in mind that if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
We hope this article helps you pick the best resume writing service for you. Good luck with your job search!
