An average of 250 resumes are sent for a single opening. See how ZipJobs uses professional writers and technology to get your resume noticed.

These days, the internet is flooded with an overwhelming number of resume writing services. Believe it or not, a simple search for “resume writing services” generates over 8,000 results.

You’ll find results for local and national options, as well as specialists in different industries.

While browsing the results, you’ll notice hundreds of companies and freelancers offering resume writing services that appear to be quite shady. Since your resume can get your foot in the door and help you land the right job, it’s important to select a quality service that gets you results.

To help take the guesswork out of choosing the right resume service for you, we’ve created this post of the 12 best resume services for job seekers (including our service: Zipjob).

Should You Use a Local or National Service?

While searching for resume services, you will find both national and local results. The only time you would choose to use a local service is when you are meeting the writer face to face.

The majority of local services will work with you virtually (not in person) so you may be better off hiring a national company that has multiple writers and ATS technology.

  • Pricing: $139 – $299
  • Turnaround: 3 to 6 days
  • Writers: 100+
  • Industries: All industries including Business, Finance, IT, Healthcare, Sales, Marketing, and more.

Zipjob uses a tech-informed, expert-designed protocol to create resumes that appeal to ATS scans and hiring managers: the same technology used by employers to screen resumes.

Writers experienced in resume keyword optimization add an extra step at the end of the process to ensure your new resume will be parsed correctly by an ATS scan.

Pros of using Zipjob

  • Professional writers — US-based writers
  • ATS technology — 75% of resumes are rejected by resume scanners (ATS). Zipjob uses the same ATS technology employers use to help ensure your resume gets through to a hiring manager.
  • Accessible communication — One of the few services that allow you to speak to your writer by phone (included in the premium package) and give you direct, unlimited access to them via the dashboard.
  • Collaboration — You can count on Zipjob to work with you to create the perfect resume for your unique experience and career goals. Zipjob provides you with revisions, advice, and explanations.
  • No limits — While other resume writing services limit the number of revisions they’ll make, Zipjob offers unlimited revisions. You can enjoy the peace of mind of knowing you’ll be 100% satisfied with your final draft.
  • Reputation — Zipjob’s reputation speaks for itself. Zipjob has been featured in ForbesReader’s DigestMarketwatchGlassdoorThe Muse and other big-name media outlets. In addition, Zipjob has earned over 500 five-star reviews and 10,000+ happy clients.

How Zipjob works

  1. Upload your resume and answer a few questions.
  2. Get matched with a resume writing expert in your field who will overhaul your resume by focusing on formatting, keywords, and writing style. Collaborate with your writer for as many rounds of edits as you need.
  3. Approve a final draft and receive confirmation that your new resume document is ATS compatible.

An ATS has another important job — filtering out the resumes that don’t meet the pre-set requirements. On average, applicant tracking systems delete 75% of the resumes submitted.

Zipjob’s resume writing services are designed for companies hiring in the USA and Canada, which is where all of the writers are located.

Zipjob can be contacted by phone at (888) 944-9929 or live chat from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET. You can also email customer service any time at support@www.zipjob.com.

  • Turnaround: 4-7 days
  • Writers: 80+
  • Industries: All industries including HR/recruiting, fitness/health, and fashion.

The Muse offers a different model for resume writing services. Instead of a text-based collaboration, The Muse has a resume review coaching service that includes a resume update. Depending on the coaching service you purchase, you can have a 30, 45, or 60 minute Skype or phone call with a professional.

Pros of using The Muse

  • Highly interpersonal — If you are looking for a conversation about your resume, this coaching service is a great option.
  • Lots of options — The Muse has a wide network of experts in a range of fields. Mentors, coaches, and master coaches are vetted and backed by The Muse.

Working with The Muse:

  1. Choose a service such as “Resume Review” coaching, “Resume and LinkedIn Review” coaching, or the “Ultimate Job Search” Kit.
  2. Book a coach, based on filters like your industry and years of experience.
  3. Schedule your coaching call. Your coach will contact you within one business day of your booking.

  • Pricing: $100- $700+
  • Turnaround: 3 to 14 days
  • Writers: 100+
  • Industries: All industries including Finance, IT, Healthcare, Marketing and more.

Most people use LinkedIn to search for jobs and career-related information. However, many are unaware that it offers a “professional service marketplace” called LinkedIn ProFinder for interviewing, career coaching, and resume writing.

Pros of using LinkedIn Profinder

  • Time efficient — Receive proposals quickly from your potential resume writer.
  • Person to person — Pick from a number of professionals whom you want to work with, based on their LinkedIn profiles and other information they provide.
  • Cost effective — Since these are freelancers, the prices may be more competitive than a company. Still expect to pay $100+ for a quality resume, but know that your money is going directly to your writer.
  • Local options — You can opt for local-only professionals, making this a great option if you feel strongly about meeting with your resume writer in person.

Speaking of LinkedIn, do you know how to include your LinkedIn URL on a resume?

Working with LinkedIn ProFinder:

  1. Answer a couple of questions about the services you’re looking for.
  2. Within 24 hours (and likely much sooner), get up to 5 proposals from professionals on LinkedIn’s list. Each proposal will include a price quote.
  3. Research and select your resume writer. Every writer will have a different system to process from there.

LinkedIn ProFinder helps you find freelancers, but doesn’t have a company-wide standard for resume writing. Instead, you should look into multiple freelancers based on their proposals and pick the resume style you like best as not all freelancers are created equal.

If you need any help, LinkedIn offers a ProFinder concierge team, which is essentially tech support for hiring a pro. You can use live chat or a contact form to reach out.

  • Certified writers — The resume writers are introduced with a photo and a certification on the Capstone website. Each member is a Certified Professional Resume Writer with a different background.
  • Specializations — Certain resumes, like Executive and Federal, require specialized formats. 10. Fiverr

Best Resume Writers: Fiverr.
Best Resume Writers: Fiverr.
  • Pricing: $10 – $500
  • Turnaround: 5 to 7 days
  • Writers: 100+
  • Industries: All industries, including professional, academic, and federal.

If you’re on a budget or an entry level applicant, Fiverr has some options for you to consider. It can connect you with a variety of service providers, but it isn’t based on proposals.

Instead, you can choose from over 2,000 freelancers by searching for “resume writing” services, with additional filters for “resume design,” “resume and cover letter,” and even “ATS resume.”

For the budget-conscious—looking at you, recent grads—Fiverr is a good option.

There are hundreds of writers to pick from and the rates are usually low enough to allow a few revisions or even experimenting with a few different writers.

Pros of using Fiverr

The Up Side of Fiverr for Resume Writing

There are some pretty obvious up-sides to using a service like Fiverr. Our favorites are price, selection, and flexibility. If you’ve never bought a Fiverr gig, here’s what you need to know.

  • Price — This is, by far, the biggest advantage Fiverr has over other options. You can get a resume written for $5 to $500, with most services in the $30 to $70 range.
  • Selection — You can select the exact writer you want, based on their services, prices, reviews, and product features.
  • Personalization — To stay competitive, the freelance resume writers are often much more flexible than company services. You can work with your writer for add-on services that appeal to you, instead of paying for a package that isn’t exactly what you need.
  • Built-in protection — The Fiverr service has a built-in payment platform to protect you from scams. Your money isn’t released to your freelancer until you approve the work. Fiverr also offers 27/7 buyer support.

Fiverr Resume Writing Price

This is, by far, the biggest advantage Fiverr has over other options. Gigs start at $5 and often may only go as high as $25 for some of the standard add-ons like Cover Letters or editable files.

In our research, gigs with 24-hour delivery, editable files, and edit/rewrite options still started at $5. Starting prices went as high as $125.

Fiverr’s Selection

Fiverr’s entire philosophy is bringing together buyers and sellers—and they do a great job of it. Exact figures were hard to come by, but our research suggests that they have more than 100,000 active users. Probably much more than that.

There’s something for everyone. That’s especially true for budget shoppers who are trying to get the best deal or find a vendor whose taste and style match yours.

Fiverr Options

The size and competition of the Fiverr gig economy mean that sellers are always trying to compete for more buyers. And as with any economy, demand drives supply.

Fiverr gig sellers are generally very flexible, and are willing to offer customized addons or upsells for a price. That gives buyers the chance to get exactly the personalization they want, with a professional quality.

The Down Side of Fiverr for Resume Writing

What to know about using Fiverr

The downsides of Fiverr are pretty obvious, too. And, in some ways, the very features that we just described as up-sides can also have considerable downsides.

You’re on your own

Given the hands-off approach that Fiverr takes to its marketplace, you won’t have much recourse if you don’t get what you were promised or if you’re unsatisfied with the results.

Yes, you can dispute and complain, etc.—similar to how eBay handles disputes—but that’s not the same thing as being able to speak to a support rep or a supervisor to get your issue addressed.

No access to writer

Unless the gig seller allows it, you’ll have no access to them other than the communication channels built into Fiverr—no phone, no direct email. Just a dashboard.

In most cases, that works out fine. But many job seekers want the reassurance of a verbal conversation with their writer. Very hard to do on Fiverr.

Beware of fakes

Fiverr is notorious for fakers, especially when it comes to their reviews. It’s basically impossible to trust any reviews you see on a Seller’s profile.

Buying Fiverr reviews is rampant, even though it’s against the terms. There are even how-to articles written about how to buy Fiverr reviews and avoid detection.

How to work with Fiverr

  1. Search for people who have experience and samples of their work.
  2. Follow the freelancer’s process of giving information, reviewing a resume, and providing feedback.

You have to be careful about the freelancer you hire as Fiverr has a long history of faked reviews and many complaints about customer service responding quickly.

Sellers may be located anywhere in the world, and may not be qualified to provide the services they claim to. Read our tips on how to avoid a scam at the bottom of this article to feel confident in your choice.

11. Thumbtack

Best Resume Writers: Thumbtack.
Best Resume Writers: Thumbtack.
  • Pricing: $50 – $500+
  • Turnaround: 5 to 7 days
  • Writers: 100+
  • Industries: All industries, including very niche industries

Thumbtack is another way to find individuals providing resume services. Think of it as an online bulletin board. You can use the site to search for resume writers and filter based on travel preferences, target industry, and additional service needs. Thumbtack is not involved in the payment process, so you will have to work with your writer to discuss your options.

Thumbtack charges its pros to send a quote to potential clients, so do your research before contacting a resume writer. The company makes it easy for vendors to be upfront about pricing, expertise, qualifications, and even Q&As about why they’re in the business. Keep an eye out for badges such as “Top Pro,” “In High Demand,” and “Great Value” to help guide your choice.

Pros of using Thumbtack

  • Flexibility — Some resume writers offer unusual services such as resume distribution, life coaching, and supporting clients until they land a great job.
  • Diverse backgrounds — Resume writers on Thumbtack come from a variety of professional backgrounds so you can find exactly what you need for your new resume.
  • Pricing — The pricing ranges from $50 to $500. A basic resume writing service is more cost-effective here than with the majority of companies.
  • Built-in verified reviews — Thumbtack includes verified reviews directly on the pro’s service page. Only people who have interacted with the pro can leave a review, which adds in a level of trust that Fiverr lacks. The pro can respond to the review, but cannot delete it.

Working with Thumbtack

  1. Search resume writers and filter, research, and select your writer.
  2. Follow their system to get your resume.

If your pro fails to provide the agreed upon service, Thumbtack can help if you contact them within 45 days. You can contact them through their site if you have an account. The Thumbtack website recommends you get everything in writing including the scope of service and the agreed upon price.

12. Military Resume Writers

Best Resume Writers: Military Resume Writers.
Best Resume Writers: Military Resume Writers.

How to spot a resume service scam

How to spot a resume writing scam.

If you skimmed the rest of the article, and just wanted to reach this part, here’s all you need to know about WHY some of these resume writing service websites are scams, and how to spot the signals for yourself.

Some of the websites ranking and/or advertising near the top of Google search results aren’t what they seem to be.

Since it’s relatively easy to set up a website and position yourself as a professional, resume writing scams are rampant. And the stats predict that ~30% of searchers will click on the #1 result. That’s 900 new victims a month–clearly something is wrong here.

We’ve even talked to Google about it; we’ll update this post if we get the matter sorted out. In the meantime, we’re committed to helping you identify these junk resume companies and encourage you to follow these tips for spotting a resume writing scam.

Tips for spotting a resume writing scam:

  1. Look for credibility
  2. Look out for affiliate marketing
  3. Be realistic (no false promises!)

1. Look for credibility.

Before you pay someone, run a quick search for reviews. Look for established sites like Better Business Bureau, Angie’s List, or Consumer Reports.

Check out at user reviews on Trustpilot, SiteJabber, Reddit, and Quora, but be on alert for 5 star reviews that all say the same thing or aren’t from a verified order.

They appear as though they’re genuine ‘best of’ posts, meant to help users. But they’re just marketing.

These deceptions are hard to spot unless you know the industry, but they become pretty clear after some research.

We’re reminded of those “4 out of 5 dentists recommend” commercials. If you asked 5 dentists, you’d see a clear majority pointing toward the same recommendation.

4 Out of 5 Dentists Trident Commercial

But what if you only ask one dentist? Then how would you know? You need a few more points of comparison in order to draw the best conclusion. The same is true here.

When you find one of these ‘best of’ articles (this one included!) take their rankings/reviews with a grain of salt, and do some follow-up research.

  • Google “best resume writing services,” open all of the first 10 Google results, and see what gets recommended most.
  • Google each of the recommended services by name and see what comes up. If it looks scammy, it probably is.

2. Watch out for affiliate marketing.

As we alluded to at the beginning of this post, many “best resume services” lists are affiliate marketing lists.

If the links they have pointing to the other resume services are affiliate links, that means that these scammers earn a commission when anyone signs up with these services by way of their junk website(s).

While this doesn’t mean the services are scams, it does mean that the people writing the lists have a financial interest in you purchasing services through their links.

Again, affiliate links don’t automatically make something a scam. The problem is a lack of transparency.

When the affiliate links aren’t disclosed anywhere on the page and they never tell you that there’s money on the line with their recommendations, we consider that a problem.

3. Be realistic (no false promises!)

You’ll also want to ignore offers that promise to get you your dream job, guarantee ridiculously fast turnaround times, or send you a resume draft without communicating with you about your goals and experience.

Professional resume writers can improve your resume’s content and design, but should never present you as someone else. Be realistic with your expectations!

Any lack of disclosure means that you—the customer—don’t have all the information. And therefore you can’t make the best decision about whether or not to trust the reviews.

A trustworthy resume service will be open and transparent about how they do what they do.

  • Are they using an ATS?
  • Do they have qualified writers doing manual reviews?

We’ve got pages and pages of information on how to optimize your resume for ATS.

Hiring the Best Professional Resume Writing Services

Writing a resume is hard. Job searching is stressful. The industry analysts say the average job search lasts 40 weeks—about 9 or 10 months.

Why is it so hard to find a job? Lots of reasons. But there are a lot of great resources out there and some not-so-great ones.

Getting a professionally-written resume should never add to your stress, so we hope this list helps you choose the best option for your career goals.

You’ll notice that many companies on this list offer a free resume review or a resume consultation. Some can even help you answer questions like “what’s the right way to list hobbies and interests on a resume?

This is a great option for getting a variety of opinions on your existing resume.

However, watch out for impersonal or general advice that doesn’t seem to relate to your resume submission. Some services are automated, despite what their misleading advertising may claim.

Do your homework and keep the faith. Everyone finds a job sooner or later. It takes patience, persistence, and preparation.

We hope this article helped you improve your job search, or better yet—end it! But if you still need help, please get in touch! This is what we do for a living, and we’d love to help you too.

Don’t take our word for it

It’s easy for us to write a blog post and claim we’re the best. But if we did only that, we’d be no better than the scams we cover later in this post.

So to back up our claims, we’ve included some customer reviews to show how much our clients love us.

There’s a reason our resources rank among the top search results for:

  • Best IT Resume Service
  • Best Finance Resume Service
  • Best Healthcare Resume Service
  • …and even…
  • Best Federal Resume Service

These 600+ Zipjob reviews are compiled and stored by TrustPilot, a neutral third party—not by us. Please feel free to leave your own review there if you’re happy with our work!

We know you will be. Because we know what we’re doing and our customers do, too. If you like what you see, give us a try👇

There are many professional resume writing services to choose from, such as the 12 on this list. Since there is no shortage of fraudulent services out there, do your due diligence before giving your private information to a less than reputable company.

The best resume writing services have good examples, positive reviews, and responsive customer service teams. A variety of ways to contact the company is a good indicator of a legitimate business, but we advise you to try out one or two methods of contact before making your selection. Steer clear of disconnected phone numbers and unanswered emails!

Remember that resume writing services are mainly digital today, so you don’t need to limit your search to local options. When in doubt, however, keep in mind that if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

We hope this article helps you pick the best resume writing service for you. Good luck with your job search!
